On December 8, 2019, a team of ICT sector players led by Alex Fares, CEO of Unitel Services Limited, called on the government to review its policies to boost the sector and create more jobs for the youth.
According to the experts, post-secondary ICT training for young innovators could unlock the sector's untapped potential.
They emphasized that the ICT sector should be made part of President Uhuru Kenyatta's Big Four Agenda, which aims to drive economic growth and development.
Mr. Fares noted that while Kenya has made strides in boosting ICT growth and internet access, more efforts are needed to make reliable and efficient connectivity a reality, particularly in Northern Kenya where internet coverage is at its lowest.
He highlighted the importance of internet connectivity in driving economic growth, saying that with better internet connectivity, e-services will be within reach in health, education, and across all critical sectors of the economy.
Unitel, a Kenyan-owned company licensed by the Communications Authority of Kenya, is set to expand its operations in East Africa, with plans to enter South Sudan, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Rwanda.
According to Denis Radonji, Unitel's director in charge of development, strategy, and innovations, the company has aligned itself to the government's Big Four Agenda and is working closely with the ministry of ICT to improve ICT services.
