On December 8, 2019, the ACP Group of States announced the selection of Ambassador Georges Rebelo Pinto Chikoti of Angola as its new Secretary General.

Chikoti will take office in March 2020, succeeding Patrick I. Gomes, a former deputy from Guyana, who has held the post for several years.

Chikoti's appointment comes after a competitive process, in which he was one of three candidates vying for the position, alongside ambassadors from Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

With over 20 years of experience as a foreign minister, Chikoti brings a wealth of experience to the role, which he will hold for five years until 2025.
