Published on December 8, 2019, a hotel in Kwale County has taken a significant step in supporting working mothers by setting up a lactation room. Diani Reef Beach Resort and Spa has created a private and clean space for employees to express breast milk, complete with baby cots, toys, a mini fridge, and diapers.
Operations Manager Jotham Mwang'ombe emphasized the importance of protecting lactating mothers from being seen by coworkers and guests while breastfeeding or pumping breast milk. He stated that working mothers will be given a 40-minute lactation break every four hours while on duty.
As the high season approaches, the hotel is bracing for an influx of holidaymakers flocking to the South Coast for Christmas and New Year celebrations. To attract more guests, the hotel has recruited a specialist chef, Adil Karim, to prepare Swahili-themed dishes.
The hotel has also opened a Sake restaurant specializing in Chinese and Japanese cuisines. According to Mwang'ombe, hotel bookings have risen steadily to about 80 percent since November, with the goal of reaching 100 percent by New Year.
