On December 6, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was arrested in Voi, Taita Taveta County, over graft claims. He was airlifted to Nairobi and is being detained at the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission's cell pending arraignment on Monday.

According to Sonko's secretary, Ben Mulwa, the governor has stomach complications and sustained injuries on his arm during the dramatic arrest. Mulwa has requested that Sonko's lawyer, Cecil Miller Jr, make a formal request to authorities to allow him to seek urgent medical attention.

High Court judge John Onyiego denied Sonko anticipatory bail on Friday, paving the way for his detention. Sonko will face graft-related charges alongside 15 other suspects, including County Secretary Peter Mbugua, and members of the tender committee.
