As of 2019, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has simplified the process for some permanent residents to renew their green cards, allowing them to apply online.

Eligible individuals can now create an account on the USCIS website and e-file Form I-90 to renew or replace their cards, reducing the need for in-person visits and paperwork.

To be eligible for online renewal, permanent residents must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Lost, stolen, or destroyed card
  • Mutilated card
  • Change in name or biographical information
  • Card expiring within six months or has already expired
  • Commuter status
  • Resident commuter status with actual residence in the US
  • Automatically converted to permanent resident
  • Older edition of the card requiring replacement

However, individuals with a two-year conditional green card, applying for a fee waiver, or experiencing other specific circumstances are not eligible for online renewal.

Those who e-file online will pay the $450 fee and submit supporting evidence electronically, receiving an electronic confirmation receipt and Form I-797C, Notice of Action, by mail.
