On December 7, 2019, a dramatic rescue operation came to an end at the Likoni ferry crossing channel in Kenya, where a vehicle had plunged into the Indian Ocean.
According to the Kenya Ferry Services, the driver, 46-year-old John Mutinda, defied calls to stop and sped off the ramp, plunging into the waters at 4:20 am.
After a three-hour search and rescue operation involving personnel from the Kenya Ferry Service, Kenya Navy, and Coast Guard Services, a multi-agency team successfully pulled out a saloon vehicle from the Indian Ocean at exactly noon.
The vehicle was retrieved just hours after the remains of its driver had been recovered and taken to the mortuary after identification by relatives at the scene.
Managing Director of the Kenya Ferry Service, Bakari Gowasaid, confirmed that Mutinda met his fate after ignoring warnings from ramp controllers.
His family, however, revealed that he had left the house in the wee hours of the morning without disclosing his destination.
This accident comes barely three months after a 35-year-old woman and her four-year-old daughter died after their car plunged into the ocean at the same ferry crossing channel.
