Tharaka Nithi Building Collapse: Heavy Rainfall Brings Down Another Structure ¶
Heavy rainfall in Tharaka Nithi county on December 7, 2019, led to the collapse of a building, injuring at least 12 people and prompting rescue efforts.
According to the Kenya Red Cross, the incident occurred near Chuka University, in an area known as Ndagani.
Rescue efforts are ongoing, with the Kenya Red Cross and other emergency services working to evacuate those trapped in the rubble.
At least 29 people were rescued from the building and taken to Mama Lucy Hospital for treatment.
Kenya Red Cross officials have appealed for calm, urging residents to remain peaceful as rescue efforts continue.
"The building had 57 rooms, and we believe there may be people trapped in the debris. We urge residents to remain calm as the government works to rescue those affected," said Gordon Kihalangwa, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Public Service.
On the same day, a similar incident occurred in Tassia, Nairobi, where four people were reported dead and several others injured.
Heavy rainfall has caused widespread damage in Kenya, with several buildings collapsing in recent days.
Residents are advised to remain vigilant and follow evacuation orders from authorities.
