Published on December 7, 2019, Kenya Railways has announced plans to increase the capacity of its Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) passenger train to meet the high demand during the festive season.
The extra coaches, which will cater to both economy and first-class passengers, will be added from December 22, 2019, to January 3, 2020.
According to Kenya Railways, the morning train from Mombasa and the afternoon train from Nairobi will feature an additional first-class and four economy class coaches from December 22, 2019, to January 3, 2020, with the exception of December 28, 2019.
Kenya Railways has a history of increasing the train coaches during the holiday season to cater for the surge in demand. The SGR passenger train service, launched in June 2017, has seen a significant rise in demand, which has dealt a huge blow to commuter bus operators.
“With the exception of Dec. 28, the morning train from Mombasa and the afternoon train from Nairobi will feature an additional first-class and four economy class coaches from Dec. 22, to Jan. 3, 2020,” said Kenya Railways in a notice.
