On December 7, 2019, Governor Mike Sonko's world came crashing down as he faced the music for his alleged wrongdoings. The EACC and DPP offices had been hot on his heels, and it was only a matter of time before he was apprehended.
As reported by Weekly Citizen, Sonko's attempt to escape arrest by taking the SGR train to Mombasa and then to his home in Kanamai, Kilifi county, was thwarted when his convoy was flagged down near Maungu on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.
Cornered at the Ndara road block, Sonko and his plain-clothed bodyguards put up a fierce resistance, but they were no match for the contingent of armed GSU and regular police officers who dragged him away, screaming and panting.
During his arrest, Sonko allegedly beat up several individuals at the road block, airstrip, and Voi police station.
Police and intelligence officers had laid traps at Sonko's residences in Kanamai and Vipingo, as well as at hotels he frequented, to ensure his capture. Border posts at Lunga, Kwale county, and Taveta, Taita Taveta county, were also put on high alert.
After being taken to Voi police station, Sonko was later airlifted to Nairobi in a helicopter, where he was met with a team of officers ready to take him into custody.
