This archive report was first published on 7 December 2019.

On December 7, 2019, a tragic incident occurred in Likoni, Kenya, when a car plunged into the Indian Ocean, claiming the lives of its occupants.

The driver, John Mutinda, was identified after a recovery exercise conducted by a combined team of Kenya Coast Guard Service, the Kenya Navy, and rescue teams.

According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle floated for over 20 minutes before it sank, leaving no time for rescue efforts.

A witness, identified as Nyalo, described the scene, saying, 'DADA ALITOA MKONO NJE YA DIRISHA LAKINI HAKUNA USAIDIZI WALIPATA. GARI ILIKAA JUU YA MAJI ZAIDI YA DAKIKA ISHIRINI KABLA YA KUZAMA.' [THE 35-YEAR-OLD MOTHER TRIED TO WAVE THROUGH THE WINDOW BEGGING FOR HELP BUT NO ONE WENT TO SAVE HER AND HER DAUGHTER. THE VEHICLE FLOATED FOR MORE THAN 20 MINUTES BEFORE IT SANK.] THERE WAS NO SPEED BOAT TO SAVE THEM.'

Our condolences go out to the family of John Mutinda.
