On December 7, 2019, a tragic incident occurred at the Likoni Channel in Kenya, where a saloon car plunged into the Indian Ocean.
The Kenya Ferry Service (KFS) suspects that the incident may have been a suicide mission, coming just two months after a similar incident involving Mariam Kighenda and her 4-year-old daughter Amanda Mutheu.
According to KFS, the driver of the vehicle ignored ramp officials and sped off to the ocean, despite being flagged to slow down and stop.
"It is with sadness that we would like to confirm that at around 4:20 am on the Mainland side of the channel, a motorist driving a saloon car drove off to the ramps with high speed to the ocean even after being flagged by our ramp controllers to slow down and stop," the statement said.
Rescue operations are currently underway, conducted by KFS's rescue boat and with the help of the Kenya Navy.
