On Friday morning, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was arrested at a roadblock in Voi, Taita Taveta County, following a directive from Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji. The arrest was carried out by detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), who claimed Sonko was attempting to evade arrest by heading to Mombasa.

High Court Judge John Onyiego subsequently denied Sonko's application for anticipatory bail, citing the need for the prosecution to respond to his claims of constitutional rights violations during the arrest. As a result, Sonko's application will be heard on Monday.

With this development, Sonko, who is accused of misappropriating Sh357 million in public funds, will spend the weekend in police custody. He is set to face various graft-related charges, including willful failure to comply with the law relating to procurement, conflict of interest, abuse of office, and others.
