On December 6, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was arrested and denied bail by High Court judge Justice John Onyiengo over the loss of Sh357 million.
According to reports, Sonko is facing charges of conspiracy to commit economic crime, willful failure to comply with the law, and conflict of interest.
Justice Onyiengo ruled that Sonko's arrest was a legal process and that he couldn't interfere with it.
As a result, Sonko will spend the next 61 hours in police cells.
Earlier, DPP Noordin Haji had ordered Sonko's arrest, stating that there was enough evidence to charge him.
When arrested, Sonko was airlifted from Voi to Nairobi, where he was taken to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission headquarters.
However, the exercise to airlift him from Ikanga Airstrip was not free of drama, with Sonko resisting boarding the awaiting police chopper.
When questioned about his arrest, Sonko denied that he was running from the law, stating that he was on his way to Mombasa to attend a workshop.
He also expressed hope that soon the truth will come out and he will be freed.
