On December 6, 2019, a devastating six-story building collapse occurred in Tassia Estate, Embakassi East, Nairobi, claiming the lives of at least four people and leaving over 29 others injured.
Among the injured, eight people sustained serious injuries and are currently fighting for their lives at different health facilities, including Mama Lucy and Kenyatta hospitals.
Nairobi regional commissioner Wilson Njenga and public works Permanent Secretary Gordon Kihalangwa led the rescue mission efforts, urging the public to remain calm as all government agencies assisted in the evacuation.
According to Kihalangwa, there were 57 rooms in the building, and many people are believed to be trapped inside. He stated,
“There were 57 rooms, in the building and we believe there are many people trapped inside, we urge the public to remain calm as all government agencies are here helping in the rescue mission,” said Kihalangwa.
The incident occurred just months after a class collapse in Ngong area in September 2019, resulting in the death of eight pupils.
