Published on December 6, 2019, a devastating building collapse in Nairobi's Tassia estate has left a trail of destruction and loss of life.

Onlookers rushed to the scene, using their bare hands to pull injured people coated in dust from beneath the huge slabs of concrete.

The Kenyan Red Cross reported 11 survivors had been recovered from the flattened block, while Nairobi Regional Commissioner Wilson Njenga confirmed at least three people had been killed and 21 rescued.

The search for survivors was ongoing, with specialised rescue crews and heavy earth-moving equipment working alongside volunteers and onlookers to trawl through the wreckage.

The building, which housed 57 units, was the latest in a series of housing collapses in Nairobi, where shoddy construction and flouted regulations have resulted in deadly accidents.

Kenya is undergoing a construction boom, but corruption has allowed contractors to cut corners or bypass regulations, putting lives at risk.

Recent incidents, including the collapse of a school in September that killed seven children, and a six-floor building in April 2016 that killed 49 people, highlight the need for stricter regulations and enforcement.
