On Friday morning, a gunman opened fire at Naval Air Station Pensacola, leaving multiple people injured and prompting a lockdown at the base.

According to the Escambia County Sheriff’s office, the gunman was confirmed dead, but the circumstances of their death were not immediately clear.

Five patients were received at Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, but their conditions were not disclosed. ‘They are going through triage,’ said Candy McGuyre, a spokeswoman for the hospital.

Ascension Sacred Heart hospital was informed that six patients were en route, said Mike Burke, a spokesman.

The Pensacola Police Department and base security officials began receiving calls about the shooting around 6:30 a.m., said Jason Bortz, a spokesman for the base.

The base was put on lockdown, and an investigation into the shooting was launched.

It was the second shooting at a Navy base this week, following a similar incident at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Oahu on Wednesday.

Naval Air Station Pensacola, which dates back to the 1820s, is considered the home of naval aviation and is where the Navy’s Blue Angels flight demonstration team is based.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis offered his support to law enforcement, saying he was monitoring the situation at the base.
