On December 6, 2019, Safal Group announced the winners of the 2019 'Safal Eye in the Wild' photography competition, which aimed to promote sustainable conservation actions in Africa.
Twenty-eight-year-old Daniel Charles Msirikale from Tanzania emerged as the winner, taking home a cash prize of Kshs 300,000 for his photograph showing two young boys heading home from fetching water with a third boy pumping water from a borehole.
Kenyan photographers Kamal Shah and Anthony Ochieng took the Silver and Bronze Awards, respectively, with prize money of Kshs 200,000 and Kshs 100,000.
The competition received a great number of submissions from Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, and was judged by award-winning wildlife photographer Gurcharan Roopra, Uganda's Reinout Dujardin, and Tanzania's Hendri Lombard.
Denish Ochieng, a photojournalist with a Kenyan media company, won The People's Choice Award for his photograph depicting a boy cooling down his head with high-pressure water from a tap, which reached over a million people online within a few days.
Safal Group also announced a donation of Ksh 3M to Red Cross Kenya to rehabilitate water facilities within flood-stricken areas.
According to Anders Lindgren, Safal Group's Chief Executive Officer, the competition highlighted the impact of water conservation and celebrated humanity's ability to overcome challenges and live sustainably.
