On December 6, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was arrested in Voi by over 10 officers, sparking a scene that was anything but smooth.

According to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji, there was enough evidence to charge Sonko over the loss of Sh357 million in county funds.

During a press conference in Nairobi, Haji announced that the governor would be questioned over corruption, as well as alleged past criminal records, unlawful acquisition of property, and money laundering.

Despite Sonko's attempts to obstruct the probe, the investigation had been ongoing, with the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) also investigating him over corruption.

Justice James Makau had previously declined to issue a temporary restraining order against the EACC, allowing the commission to proceed with the investigation.
