Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago and Nandi Governor Steven Arap Sang have taken issue with the government's handling of the Kipchoge Keino Stadium renovations, which have stalled since 2017.
Published on December 6, 2019, the governors expressed their concerns during the Athletics Kenya Athletes' Conference at Sirikwa Hotel in Eldoret.
According to Mandago, the county government has the capacity to oversee the project, and the central government should give them the responsibility of supervising the construction.
“Even if the central government is funding it, they can give us the responsibility of supervising the project. You can’t build a stadium in Eldoret from Nairobi,” Mandago said.
Mandago added that the county government has a fully-fledged public works department that can help with the project, and that the stadium can be completed within six months if the Ministry of Sports engages them.
However, Cabinet Secretary for Sports Amina Mohamed was non-committal on the issue during the conference.
Meanwhile, Sang called on President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene in the completion of the three stalled stadiums, including the Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret and the Kamariny Stadium in Iten, Elgeyo-Marakwet County.
