Published on December 6, 2019, a matatu carrying 41 students from Lukenya University's Mtito-Andei campus tipped over in flooded River Kyamela, along Emali-Wote road, Makueni County.

The bus, belonging to Wembe Company, was traveling from Mtito-Andei to Nairobi but changed its route after encountering a traffic snarl-up caused by two separate accidents on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.

According to Makueni police boss Joseph Ole Naipeiyan, the bus had 46 passengers on board when it tipped over. The driver had changed the route due to the two accidents and was attempting to join the highway at Machakos junction when the accident occurred.

Passengers pleaded with the driver not to attempt to cross the raging waters, but he did not heed their warnings. Fortunately, no lives were lost, but some passengers were injured and lost their personal effects.
