On December 6, 2019, Mike Sonko, the then Governor of Nairobi, was arrested at the Wilson Airport following a dramatic arrest in Voi. The arrest was a culmination of a long-running investigation into corruption allegations.

As Sonko was led away in handcuffs, his supporters gathered at the airport to show their solidarity. The scene was tense, with heavily armed security personnel escorting the governor to a waiting vehicle.

According to reports, the corruption allegations against Sonko and senior City Hall officials relate to irregular payments amounting to Ksh. 357 million. The Director of Public Prosecutions, Noordin Haji, had earlier stated that he had sufficient evidence to warrant the prosecution of those involved.

Shouts of “Simba, utatoboa!” and “Mungu Yuko Nawewe” could be heard as Sonko was escorted away. — Nyakundi Report (original tweet)

The arrest and subsequent charges against Sonko marked a significant development in the ongoing fight against corruption in Kenya.
