On December 6, 2019, Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy Eric Kneedler addressed the Kenya Editors Guild Annual Editors' Convention in Mombasa, praising the Kenyan media for its investigative journalism.
Mr. Kneedler emphasized the importance of accurate and responsible reporting, stating, 'We see excellent investigative journalism unearthing corruption in Kenya, but we need more of it to reveal the depth and impact of theft of public resources.'
He also cautioned journalists against accepting handouts from corrupt individuals, urging them to maintain their independence and integrity in the fight against graft.
The US Embassy has been a strong supporter of the Kenya Editors Guild Press Freedom initiative, providing a Sh20 million grant to expand media freedom and independence in Kenya.
Mr. Kneedler noted that the grant enables the Editors Guild to undertake trainings by independent media professionals in investigative and ethical journalism, providing Kenyan journalists with opportunities to engage with international media experts.
