On December 6, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta signed the Kenya Roads Board (Amendment) Bill 2019 into law, marking a significant milestone in the country's roads sector.
The new law aims to reform the mandate and operations of the Kenya Roads Board and other agencies involved in road construction and maintenance.
Key reforms outlined in the law include allocating 10% of annual parliamentary funds to rural roads, with a cap on administrative expenditure set at 18%.
The Kenya Rural Roads Authority will administer the Constituency Roads fund, which is limited to 25% of the annual allocation.
The National Highways Authority will receive 45% of the annual allocation, while the Kenya Urban Roads Authority will receive 15%.
The Kenya Wildlife Service will receive 1% of the annual allocation for road maintenance and construction within national parks and game reserves.
During the signing ceremony, key officials including the Head of Public Service, Attorney General, Speaker of the National Assembly, and Majority Leader in the National Assembly were in attendance.
