On Thursday, a police constable and three civilians were arrested in Nairobi for allegedly stealing Ksh.50,000 from a driver.
Constable Job Anyona, based at Railways Police Station, was among those arrested.
According to the DCI, the victim, a car-hire driver, was attending a relative's graduation at the Kenya Medical Training College when the gang of four, claiming to be police officers, handcuffed him, took his phone and car keys, and demanded Ksh.30,000 for his release.
However, the driver was forced to borrow the remaining Ksh.20,000 from friends through M-Pesa, but the gang still refused to release him.
Fortunately, the driver spotted a Police Chief Inspector and sought help, causing the gang to flee.
Members of the public cornered and arrested the gang, who were later found to be in possession of two mobile phones, Ksh.50,140 in cash, a damaged police pocket phone, and handcuffs.
The suspects are currently in custody and will be charged accordingly. The DCI commended the public for their role in fighting crime.
