Kenya's fight against corruption has taken a significant step forward with the arrest of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on December 6, 2019.

According to a statement posted on the EACC's Twitter account, Sonko was arrested in Voi after he attempted to evade the anti-graft agency's officers.

As part of the ongoing investigation into corruption allegations, Sonko has been taken to the EACC headquarters in Nairobi for further questioning before being presented in court.

Just hours after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji ordered Sonko's arrest, citing sufficient evidence against him, the governor was apprehended.

It remains to be seen whether Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi will take over as acting governor for the next 60 days following Sonko's arrest.
