On December 6, 2019, Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji warned Governors Ferdinand Waititu and Moses Lenolkulal against opening parallel offices, saying it sets a dangerous precedent for other public officials.
Speaking during a press briefing, the DPP faulted the Senate for going against court orders, saying this undermines the rule of law.
“The court has said these governors should not return to office, but another arm of government has decided to do the opposite. We must ask ourselves, what is the purpose of this?” he said.
The DPP also criticized the judiciary for allowing suspects in public office to defy orders, saying this goes against the Constitution.
He warned the Senate that this trend could set a precedent for members of Parliament, saying “tomorrow, you will also hear that the police and the military are doing as they please.”
The DPP emphasized that leaders must let the prosecutorial system run its course, allowing suspects to prove their innocence in court.
