On December 6, 2019, a significant development took place in Kenya when Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was arrested in Voi while on a train to Mombasa.

The arrest was a result of orders issued by the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji, who demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of Sonko over allegations of corruption.

According to Haji, Sonko and his staff face charges of conspiracy to commit economic crimes, willful failure to comply with the law, and conflict of interest.

Other crimes Sonko will be charged with include conflicts of interest arising from receiving monies from the county while serving as governor, unlawful acquisition of public property, money laundering, and other economic crimes.

As per Haji's orders, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) was directed to effect the immediate arraignment of Sonko and other officials before the court.

Those to be charged alongside Sonko include Peter Mbugua Kariuki (County Secretary), Patrick Mwangang'i (Head Supply Chain Management), and several others.

It is worth noting that Sonko was apprehended on a SGR train in Voi, marking a significant moment in the ongoing corruption saga in Nairobi.
