Published on December 6, 2019, a report by Weekly Citizen revealed a Sh300 million project by Meru County to construct a 10-storey office building for ward representatives.

The project, which also involves the purchase of four acres of land for the construction of houses for the county speaker, Governor Kiraitu Murungi, and deputy governor, has sparked controversy.

According to Meru County Assembly Speaker Joseph Kaberia, the building will alleviate congestion and provide a conducive working environment for Members of County Assembly (MCAs).

However, suspicion surrounds the purchase of two acres of land for the construction of the governor's house, one acre for the speaker's house, and another acre for the deputy governor's building.

Weekly Citizen established that the design of the building was done by Meru County government architectural experts at no cost.

The project is expected to be completed within two to three years, depending on the allocation and availability of funds from the government.

Currently, only the speaker, clerk, majority leader Victor Karithi, minority leader Ayub Ngundi, and chief whips have offices in the assembly.
