On December 6, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko found himself at the center of a corruption storm after an arrest order was issued against him.

The order was announced by Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji during a press conference in Nairobi, where he stated that the governor would be questioned over the loss of Sh357 million in county funds.

According to Haji, his office had gathered enough evidence to charge the governor, and he also ordered police to investigate attempts to hinder the investigation.

This move comes just a few weeks after Sonko failed to stop the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) from investigating him over corruption allegations.

Additionally, the EACC is also investigating the governor over alleged past criminal records, and Sonko had attempted to temporarily restrain the commission from prosecuting him, but his efforts were unsuccessful.

Justice James Makau declined to issue the restraining order, instead transferring the case to the anti-corruption division of the High Court.

The DPP admitted that the investigation had been challenging due to the accused's repeated attempts to obstruct the probe.
