Published on December 6, 2019, a six-storey building collapsed at Tassia estate in Embakasi, Nairobi, leaving scores of people feared trapped under rubble.

At least 17 people have been rescued and taken to nearby hospitals by responders from City Hall and the Kenya Red Cross Society.

The cause of the collapse was not immediately established, but heavy rains have been pounding Nairobi and other parts of the country.

The meteorological department warned of persistent rains until the end of December, with intermittent episodes of heavy and light rainfall.

Heavy rains have been a recurring theme in Nairobi's building collapses, with many incidents occurring in areas including Zimmerman, Roysambu, South B, Huruma, and Kaloleni.

President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered an audit in 2016, which covered most parts of Eastlands, Dagoretti, Kasarani, Zimmerman, Roysambu, Githurai 44 and 45, Garden Estate, Thome, and Kilimani.

The report concluded that buildings collapse due to poor quality of concrete, lack of proper foundation, and use of substandard building stones.
