Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was arrested in Voi Town on December 6, 2019, while attempting to escape arrest at a roadblock.
According to reports, Sonko was on his way to Nairobi from Mombasa aboard the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) when detectives waylaid him.
As reported by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Sonko is being transferred to Nairobi to face charges of corruption and economic crime.
He is expected to arrive at the Wilson Airport after which he will be taken to EACC Headquarters.
The arrest follows a warrant issued by Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji for the governor's arrest over graft charges.
As stated by DPP Haji, Sonko and other officials will be arraigned for crimes including conflict of interest, unlawful acquisition of public property, money laundering, and other economic crimes.
It is not clear if the governor will be presented in court today or he will stay in custody until Monday.
