On December 6, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was arrested by police officers at a roadblock in Voi, en route to Mombasa.
The arrest came hours after the Director of Public Prosecutions, Noordin Haji, issued an order for Sonko's immediate arrest and arraignment.
According to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Sonko and several county officials are expected to face charges related to the loss of Sh357 million in county cash.
Other officials implicated in the alleged corruption include county secretary Peter Mbugua, members of the tender committee, and several others.
They will face charges of conspiracy to commit economic crime, willful failure to comply with the law, and conflict of interest.
