On Friday, December 6, 2019, Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji announced the arrest of Nairobi County Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko over corruption allegations.
According to Haji, Sonko and other officials will face charges of conflict of interest, unlawful acquisition of public property, money laundering, and other economic crimes.
Alongside Sonko, several Nairobi County employees, including Patrick Mwangangi, Samwel Mwangi, Edwin Kariuki, Peter Mbugua, and Ewin Kariuki, will also be arrested over the misappropriation of Kshs357 million.
Speaking at a press conference in Nairobi, Haji stated,
‘I have ordered for the immediate arrest and arraignment of Mike Sonko and other officials for the crimes of conflict of interest arising from having received money from the county of Nairobi while serving as governor, unlawful acquisition of public property, money laundering and other economic crimes,’
Sonko's arrest has sparked mixed reactions from Kenya's online community.
