On December 6, 2019, Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji ordered the arrest of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and several officials over graft allegations.
According to Haji, there is sufficient evidence to prove that Sonko and the officials were involved in corruption, including embezzlement of public funds, fraudulent acquisition of public property, and other economic crimes.
The officials set to be arrested alongside Sonko include Peter Mbugua, the Nairobi County Secretary, Patrick Mwangang'i, Samuel Ndung'u Mwang'i, Edwini Kariuki Murimi, Lawrence Mwangi Mukuru, and Preston Mwandiki Miriti.
The order comes just days after Sonko was summoned by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to respond to graft allegations.
"I have directed the arrest and prosecution of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and several officials from his administration. We have sufficient evidence to prove that they were involved in corruption, including embezzlement of public funds, fraudulent acquisition of public property, and other economic crimes," Haji said.
