On December 6, 2019, Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko was arrested by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission detectives in Voi, shortly after Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji ordered his arrest.
According to reports, Sonko was attempting to evade arrest when he was apprehended at a roadblock.
Early that Friday, Haji had ordered Sonko's arrest over the alleged theft of Ksh357 million and laundering of Ksh24 million through the capital government's coffers.
Speaking during a press conference, Haji also ordered the arrest of several other county officials, including County Secretary Peter Kariuki and Head of Supply Chain Management Peter Mwangangi, who he accused of lining their pockets at the expense of Nairobi City residents.
“Investigations into these crimes have been challenging because of the accused's repeated attempts to obstruct the course of the investigations by deploying intimidation tactics in addition to using goons to threaten law enforcement officials carrying out their constitutional mandate,” said Haji.
Others set to be prosecuted alongside the governor include Samuel Ndungu Mwangi, Edwin Kariuki Murimi, Lawrence Mwangi Mukuru, Wambua Ndaka, Andrew Nasiego, Anthony Mwaura Nganga, Rose Njeri Nganga, Anthony Ombok, Danson Muchemi Njungi, Robert Muriithi Muna, Zablon Onyango Ochomo, and Fredrick Odhiambo.
