As the holiday season approaches, many organizations host Christmas parties to bring their employees together and boost morale. However, these events can also be a minefield for those who are not aware of the unwritten rules of office party etiquette.

Published on December 6, 2019, experts warn that certain behaviors can end one's career, and it's not just about dancing, drinking, and having fun. While some organizations encourage their employees to let their hair down, others frown upon any deviation from the official code of behavior.

Whether explicitly stated or not, employees are expected to exercise discretion during office parties. This means retaining a degree of sobriety to accommodate lucid and appropriate conversations, especially with bosses. It's not the time to settle grudges or address grievances with colleagues, as there are ample opportunities to do so in the office.

Even when the party is held outside the office, employees should be aware that their behavior can still damage their career prospects. Organizations will reprimand employee behavior that compromises their reputation or safety, regardless of the location.

On the dance floor, employees should be mindful of their personal space and avoid intruding on others. This can be misinterpreted as harassment, which can have severe consequences for one's career. When it comes to drinks, it's best not to experiment with your capacity for alcohol, but also not to be too starchy. Authenticity and having fun are key, but with the understanding that others' perceptions of you can extend beyond your office performance.
