Arsenal's season took a turn for the worse as they suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Brighton in interim manager Freddie Ljungberg's first home match in charge.

Despite Alexandre Lacazette's 100th appearance for the Gunners being marked with a headed equalizer, Brighton's Neal Maupay sealed the win with a headed goal from Aaron Mooy's cross.

The loss leaves Arsenal on their worst winless run since 1977 and 10 points off a Champions League spot.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United stunned Sheffield United 2-0 at Bramall Lane, with Jonjo Shelvey's goal being awarded by VAR after a controversy over Andy Carroll's offside flag.

Shelvey's goal, which was his first for Newcastle, was the result of a VAR check that showed Carroll was onside when he provided the assist.

The win ends Sheffield United's seven-game unbeaten Premier League run, which had stretched back to a 1-0 defeat by Liverpool on September 28.
