On December 6, 2019, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji ordered the immediate arrest of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.
The move comes after Haji's office gathered sufficient evidence to proceed with a prosecution.
Among the allegations against Sonko is the misappropriation of approximately Sh357 million in the construction of Dandora stadium, which was made public by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) in October.
According to Haji, his investigating officers faced threats from Sonko, who attempted to hide evidence and launder his ill-gotten gains.
Should Sonko be prosecuted and ordered to leave office, the city would be left in turmoil, as there is no deputy governor in office. Speaker Beatrice Elachi might be forced to step in and act as the interim governor.
