On December 6, 2019, the Daily Nation reported on the woes of Nairobi's parking system, which has become a cash cow for the city county without providing commensurate services.
Just a short while ago, Governor Mike Sonko had slashed the daily parking fees from Sh300 to Sh200, but this relief was short-lived as the fees have since been doubled.
The city county's leadership has been accused of making crucial decisions unilaterally without explanation, leaving motorists feeling short-changed.
The parking system is marred by corruption, with a cartel of security guards operating a parallel parking system outside some premises, collecting money for themselves.
Additionally, vicious parking attendants have been taking advantage of motorists, breaking into or vandalizing cars, and yet the city county continues to collect parking charges.
It's high time Nairobi adopts a more organized parking system, such as metered bays, which would make it easier for motorists to pay for the service and avoid unnecessary charges.
