Published on December 5, 2019, Manchester City and Manchester United have both made significant strides in recent matches, making their upcoming derby a highly anticipated event.
Manchester City had been struggling, with a draw at Newcastle United being the latest in a series of below-par performances that raised concerns about their title hopes and Pep Guardiola's ability to rebuild the team.
Manchester United's draw at home to Aston Villa was also a listless display that sparked questions about Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's leadership.
However, City's 4-1 dismantling of Burnley at Turf Moor on Tuesday was a statement performance that showcased their signature style, with crisp passing, purposeful movement, and dominance near goal.
Meanwhile, United's 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday, inspired by Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay, demonstrated their ability to perform in big games.
While City may trail United by 11 points, Solskjaer's side has been at their best in the biggest games, with wins over Chelsea, Leicester City, and Spurs at Old Trafford, as well as a 1-1 draw against Liverpool.
Jose Mourinho noted that United's defensive approach and ability to take their time have been key factors in their success.
"They are not afraid to be with a defensive approach, they are not afraid to be at home, to take their time, to be in control of the emotions of the game. Then lots of young people with lots of energy and good mentality," he said.
"When they are winning matches, they are comfortable in this situation of low block and a giant dominating in the air and being fast in counter-attack," Mourinho added.
However, City's ability to dismantle defenses and limit counters will be put to the test in the derby, making it a better indicator of their ability to recapture their best form.
