On December 5, 2019, the government of Kenya invited bids for the construction of the country's first bus rapid transport system, which will be implemented on the Thika Superhighway.
The project, which is expected to cost Ksh 5.8 billion, will be carried out in two phases. Phase one will cover the section between Clayworks and Nairobi CBD, while phase two will cover the section from Clay works-Ruiru and Nairobi CBD-Kenyatta National Hospital.
The Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (Namata) has called for a contractor to improve the infrastructure of the Thika Superhighway to accommodate the bus rapid system project. The tender for the project closes on Tuesday next week, with the qualified contractor expected to take 18 months to complete the project.
Already, the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority has ordered 26 buses from South Africa to be used for the Thika Superhighway as well as Ngong road, which is under construction. Regionally, Tanzania became the first country in the East African Community to unveil a bus rapid transport system in 2016 to deal with chronic congestions in Dar-es-salaam.
