Published on December 5, 2019, a fatal road crash occurred on the Embu-Kirinyaga road, resulting in the death of one person and serious injuries to 29 others.

According to eyewitnesses and authorities, the two matatus collided head-on at Rupingazi River bridge on Thursday morning.

The victim died instantly, while the survivors, including children, suffered head, leg, and hand fractures and were taken to Embu Referral Hospital.

Three of the survivors were in a coma and were taken to the hospital's intensive care unit.

The drivers of both vehicles were among the injured.

Witnesses stated that one of the matatus, heading to Nairobi from Meru, attempted to overtake another vehicle at the bridge, a known black spot, resulting in a head-on collision with the other matatu, which had 14 passengers on board.

Embu County commissioner Abdullahi Galgalo confirmed the death of one passenger in the incident, warning drivers against flouting traffic rules on the route.

"It is true we have lost one person while 29 others were badly injured," he told journalists at the scene.
