Published on December 5, 2019, sperm donations have become a common practice in the medical industry, providing a lifeline for couples struggling with reproductive health.
At fertility clinics, recipients can choose between known donors and anonymous sperm donors for insemination. Known donors offer the advantage of familiarity, allowing children to easily identify their father and fostering a sense of belonging. On the other hand, anonymous donors provide the recipient with the option of maintaining their anonymity.
The cost of sperm donation varies, with donors in Kenya being paid between Sh.10,000 to Sh.20,000, while recipients pay around Sh.45,000 for the donation. Additional fees are incurred for consultation charges, insemination treatments, and implantation procedures, making the process costly for recipients.
Before the insemination process begins, both the donor and recipient undergo extensive screening procedures. The sperm is checked for diseases such as HIV, STDs, and genetic irregularities, while the donor is assessed medically for factors that could affect sperm quality. These screenings are repeated to ensure the safety of the process.
Interestingly, fertility clinics have ideals and qualifications that they look for in donors. Women often opt for donations that meet their desired criteria, such as height, color, and other factors. This demand-driven approach allows clinics to minimize losses and maintain a successful business.
One of the lesser-known aspects of sperm donations is the possibility of children tracking down their biological fathers. Despite signing anonymity forms, donors may still be surprised by the arrival of their offspring. This can lead to either an awkward or positive experience, depending on the individual's circumstances.
In Kenya, sperm donations have been a long-standing practice, with hospitals like Kenyatta National Hospital and Nairobi Hospital carrying out the procedure upon request. While the legal structures surrounding sperm donations are not stable, the medical industry continues to provide this service to those in need.
