Published on December 5, 2019, Laikipia teachers are at odds with the education authorities over their pay and working conditions for marking this year's KCSE exams.
According to Robert Miano, Secretary General for Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) in Laikipia, the teachers are receiving very little pay and are forced to spend nights in congested rooms.
“Marking is not a competition, whereby teachers are given a tight deadline under too much pressure,” Miano said.
He added that the competition to beat each other's deadlines in releasing exams has frustrated teachers, with over 700 examiners from Laikipia County.
Miano urged Education CS George Magoha to review the payments that have existed for over ten years, and to pay teachers a standard fee for all papers.
His deputy Douglas Mbogo further demanded that teachers be paid Ksh 100 per paper instead of the Ksh 46, with no pressure to mark in haste.
