Published on December 5, 2019, Kajiado County government has embarked on a journey to adopt austerity measures in its operations to conserve resources.
As part of these measures, Governor Joseph Lenku has banned county officials from holding retreats and meetings in expensive hotels, which have been costing the county millions of shillings in allowances annually.
County officials were previously known to use fuel-guzzling vehicles to attend meetings in these exotic hotels, further adding to the county's expenses.
These expensive trends have led to a significant increase in the county's expenditure, causing concern among the electorate.
However, Governor Lenku has set an example by taking his cabinet and chief officers to a camping site in Loitoktok for a five-day meeting, where they are sharing living space and amenities and even cleaning the site.
According to the Governor, this move has helped them save resources that would have been spent on an expensive undertaking.
As part of the austerity measures, the county aims to reduce its expenses by 10% annually, with a revenue target of two billion shillings in the current financial year.
