On December 5, 2019, a dramatic scene unfolded along Temple Road, off Nairobi's Haile Selassie Avenue, where a woman's cry for help sparked a violent confrontation.
According to eyewitnesses, the woman had been lured into a street gambling game by two men, who allegedly conned her out of Sh40,000.
The public responded quickly, accusing the police and city county officers of colluding with the gamblers who operate in broad daylight.
As the situation escalated, the two men were beaten to death by the angry mob.
At the scene, authorities found the bodies, shattered plastic furniture, and stones, as well as a motorcycle without number plates, empty boxes of electronic gadgets, and other items used to lure unsuspecting members of the public into the gambling.
The gamblers operate in groups of more than 10 people near the main bus station and along Ladhies, Pumwani, and Racecourse roads.
