On December 5, 2019, Dr. Margaret Nyakang'o was sworn in as the Controller of Budget for an eight-year term by Chief Justice David Maraga.
The swearing-in ceremony came hours after Nyakang'o was approved by the Parliamentary Finance Committee.
Her nomination by President Uhuru Kenyatta on November 19, 2019, followed the end of the term of the former Controller of Budget, Agnes Odhiambo, in August 2019.
Nyakang'o emerged as the top candidate out of 15 applicants, including Stephen Masha, who was then the acting Controller of Budget.
Before her current assignment, Nyakang'o served as a Director at the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KeBS).
During her vetting, Nyakang'o stated her intention to work towards ensuring county governments exploit more tax sources to sustain their revenue inflows.
She was previously nominated by President Uhuru Kenyatta on November 19, 2019.
