Kenyan TV Show 10 Over 10 Faces Backlash Over Immorality ¶
Published on December 5, 2019, a petition calling for the termination of the Kenyan TV show 10 Over 10 has gained over 21,000 signatures.
The show, which airs on Citizen TV on Fridays at 10pm, has been accused of promoting immorality among teenagers. A lobby group, CitizenGO, has collected the signatures and delivered a demand letter to Royal Media Services (RMS) headquarters.
The letter, dated December 3, 2019, claims that the show has been parading half-naked teenagers who dance suggestively while twerking and using all sexually provocative styles. The situation is further exacerbated by a rowdy host and ungoverned artistes who dress half-naked and lead the teenagers into provocative dances.
Despite the show airing outside the watershed period, its content is shared on social media live and always available on YouTube for all to access. The lobbyists have demanded that the show be cancelled within 14 days following the physical delivery of the signatures to the Citizen TV studios on December 4, 2019.
Other Kenyans on social media have joined the bandwagon in calling for the immediate termination of the show. However, some netizens have expressed a different opinion, blaming parents for not controlling what their children watch.
Kenya Film and Classification Board (KFCB) CEO Ezekiel Mutua had previously asked Kenyans to boycott the show, expressing concern over its contents. However, his hands were tied as the show airs outside the watershed period.
