Desmond Tutu, the 88-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has been hospitalized for the treatment of an infection, his office announced on December 5, 2019.
According to the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, Tutu has been hospitalized several times in recent years for a similar condition, but the exact nature of his current illness remains unclear.
As a prominent figure in South Africa's anti-apartheid struggle, Tutu used his pulpit as Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town to speak out against the injustices of white minority rule during the apartheid era.
Tutu, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his non-violent opposition to the apartheid regime, has also battled prostate cancer for years and has largely withdrawn from public life.
