On December 4, 2019, Egerton University issued a circular ordering students to vacate the premises immediately due to unrest.

The university's main campus in Njoro and a branch in Nakuru were closed indefinitely following student protests over fee hikes and exam demands.

According to the circular, the Senate at its 505th meeting resolved to close the university with immediate effect until further notice.

Students were protesting against a fee hike and demanding the deferment of the exam card system, re-opening of the institution portal, and deferred payment plans for those yet to finish fees.

Reports indicate that the students had destroyed some university properties, prompting police officers to lob teargas canisters.

Similar student protests were witnessed at Maseno University, where students took to the streets to protest against alleged rape cases.
